Greetings, Can you believe another year has passed? We hardly can, but are excited to finish up some projects and look forward to planning new goals for the next year. With that said, let's get on with the final newsletter of the year. In this issue, one of our very own technical support team members brings you the featured article. He discusses how Google's cached Web pages can be used to hide the actual URL being visited and offers tips on how to prevent it with your CyBlock or Cyfin product. Also, be sure to read about the latest product maintenance releases and the tech tip. And remember, if you ever have any questions about your CyBlock or Cyfin product, please feel free to contact us toll-free at 1-877-442-9346 or direct at 1-321-953-5351. We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year! Best Regards, The Wavecrest Team Using Google Cache to Access Blocked Web PagesGoogle keeps cached pages of Web sites, and assigns an IP address URL to these cached pages. This makes it easy for an employee or student to hide the type of site they are visiting. When CyBlock or Cyfin logs visits to these cached pages, it will appear as an IP address URL with IP Address categorization in the Web-use reports. There are two ways users can access these cached versions of Web pages in Google. 1. Using the "Cached" link. WaveCrest By clicking on the "Cached" link shown with the search result, Google's cached version of the page will open. The cached version of the URL is an IP address and not the site's published URL address, e.g., www.wavecrest.net. Below is an example of Google's cached URL for www.wavecrest.net. Users can also access Google's cached version of a site by using the Google alternate query type, "cache:". For example, to access the cached version of www.wavecrest.net, simply type cache:www.wavecrest.net in the Google search field. This will automatically take you to a cached version of Wavecrest Computing's Web page. Using this query type will produce the same IP address result as in the first example. Therefore, based on the example given above, if you are blocking the Hardware/Software category and a user types in cache:www.wavecrest.net in Google, they will be able to access that page unless you are blocking the IP Address category. To stop users from accessing these cached pages that would otherwise be blocked, you should block or closely monitor the IP Address category. If you own CyBlock and choose to block the IP Address category but have internal IP Addresses that need to be accessed through the Internet Explorer Web browser by your employees, you can allow them access by going to Tools – Internet Options – Connections – LAN settings and checking “Bypass for local addresses”. If you have any external IP addresses that need to be accessed, we suggest you add them to a custom category and allow that category. The Wavecrest Computing product news system was introduced in September 2006 in CyBlock Version 5.5.3 and Cyfin Version 7.5.3. If you have one of these versions of CyBlock and Cyfin or later, you may notice that the icon below occasionally shows up in the right-hand corner of the browser interface indicating that you have new product news.
We send product news to let you know general and critical information about your product. Product news items are generally updates or things you need to know about the latest product release. When viewing a news item, you will notice at the top that we indicate whether or not the news is Critical or Non-critical. Critical news is identified with a red bar, meaning that it is very important that you read the message and may require some action, while Non-critical news is identified with a green bar. A Non-critical message is typically a notification that there is a new release or update available for your product.
